What is a Vegan?

A vegan is a person who enjoys a plant-based diet and does not eat flesh or other products taken from animals (milk, cheese, eggs, honey, etc). They also choose clothing, toiletries and cleaning products which have been produced without cruelty to animals. Veganism is a lifestyle that embraces respect for all animals. It is about living in harmony with the planet and all its inhabitants, as far as possible

Perhaps the most common question about veganism is “What do vegans eat?” A vegan diet includes a wide variety of food including fruit, vegetables, bread, pasta, rice and other grains, legumes (e.g. lentils, soybeans, chickpeas) and mock meats. Many vegan versions of familiar foods are commercially available, which means you can purchase vegan burgers, hot dogs, sausages, schnitzels, ice cream, yoghurt, cheese and mayonnaise. See the shopping page of this website for more information about vegan food products and where to buy them, and our recipes section for delicious easy-to-prepare meals that you can make at home.

Why Try Veg?

By moving towards a vegan diets, we are making a conscious decision not to support the industries that exploit and kill animals. By choosing plant-based meals over meat, eggs and dairy we are sparing animals from suffering and death.
